Today, when many people think of bounce music, the first thing that pops into their head is twerking. The upbeat tempo of bounce music is the perfect beat for club-goers, entertainers and fans of the music to dance to and they often choose to dance to bounce music in a provocative way, which is referred to as twerking. Many people were first introduced to twerking on a national scale in 2013 when Miley Cyrus performed the dance at the VMAs, and a lot of people assumed that Cyrus herself came up with the concept. While this is wildly mistaken, the rise of interest in twerking led many people to the research the origins of the dance, which is bounce music.

Before Miley Cyrus however, the single event that spread the New Orleans bounce music across the southern states was, unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Hurricane Katrina tragically displaced a large amount of New Orleans residents, many of who relocated to southern states and brought their love of bounce with them. Artists began to perform bounce music in other major cities outside of Louisiana, such as Dallas, Houston and Miami, and this served as a way to introduce the sub-genre to more hip-hop and rap fans.

Elements of bounce music are heard in popular music from artists such as Beyonce, Three 6 Mafia and Lil Jon. In 2016, Drake released a song titled “Child’s Play” which samples a popular New Orleans bounce song. The fun and energizing beat of bounce music has lasted for 20 years and has impacted pop culture along the way. In 2015 twerking was added to the Oxford Dictionary and New Orleans bounce music was credited with the resurgence of the term. New Orleans has definitely impacted the rap and hip-hop genre with its creative addition of bounce music and it is sure to impact music and culture for years to come.
